The man responsible for bringing the AT&T Field to Downtown Chattanooga has died. Daniel Burke died from complications from type 1 diabetes Wednesday at his home in Rye, New York. He was 82.
Burke is the father of Lookouts general manager Frank Burke.
The Burkes purchased the rights to the Chattanooga Lookouts franchise in 1995. In 1999, the Lookouts moved into their new home, AT&T Field, atop Hawk Hill in Downtown Chattanooga.
Burke was an executive of Capital Cities Communications for 33 years. In 1985, Burke was named CEO of the company after it purchased ABC.
He retired from Capital Cities/ABC in February of 1994, one month prior to spring training for another of his minor league baseball teams, the Portland Sea Dogs.
In addition to his son Frank, he is survived by his wife Harriet “Bunny” Burke; his daughter Sally McNamara and sons Bill Burke and Steve Burke.
