The new Transportation Management Center at the Enterprise South Industrial Park was dedicated on Wednesday by Gov. Bill Haslam and Transportation Commissioner John Schroer.
Center operators monitor 71 cameras along Chattanooga’s most heavily traveled traffic corridors. They use the information to put up advisories on 16 electronic message boards over the highways and broadcast it on an AM radio station at 1620 kilohertz (1620 AM).
The SmartWay system began in Nashville in June 2003 and was later expanded to Memphis and Knoxville.
A fog warning system with cameras near the Bradley/McMinn county line will be tied into the Chattanooga system.
The traffic cameras can be viewed by anyone at http://m.tdot.tn.gov/SmartWay .
