OAK RIDGE, Tenn. – Plans for an Oak Ridge railroad museum are back on track after being delayed for a decade due to security concerns and fundraising problems.
The $1 million Southern Appalachia Railway Museum received approval last week to move forward, though it will have a different design and location than originally proposed, according to The Knoxville News Sentinel (http://bit.ly/xgSCNB ).
Plans now call for the museum to be located just inside the old K-25 site, an abandoned uranium enrichment facility that is being cleaned up to be converted into an industrial park. The new location led to the design being changed from a Victorian-era depot to a 1940s-style station.
Museum member Dick Raridon said the proposal is being fast-tracked to meet state requirements for a grant.
