Many people in Marion County have been following the status of 15-year old local girl, Kennedy Griffith, and her battle with cancer. She’s been fighting a very valiant fight against the disease for the past three years.
Kennedy and her parents, Mark and Pam, received the news last week from doctors at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, where the girl had been receiving treatments, that they are out of options in the treatment of this horrible disease.
For those who aren’t familiar with Kennedy’s battle, she was diagnosed three years ago and has fought the disease ever since. She has undergone numerous chemo and radiation treatments, had a leg amputated, a lung removed, and every time a tumor seemed to go away, another one soon appeared. Many treatment plans were utilized by doctors in hopes of fighting the disease, however none seemed to work in the long term.
Despite all of the treatments, surgeries, and even the most recent news, Kennedy has remained brave and strong, and has been an inspiration to so many.
After learning the most recent news in the girl’s story, a group of local residents have come together in hopes to show their support and love.
The event “Marion County Unites for Kennedy” was born on Facebook by local residents on the ‘Whitwell Buy Sell Trade’ Facebook group. The event encourages all who can to bring their friends and family to the Marion County fairgrounds in Jasper on Thursday night, August 16th at 6pm, to show their support for Kennedy. An aerial photograph, featuring attendees “spelling-out” their well-wishes to Kennedy from the ground will be taken at 6pm.
Organizers ask that those planning to take part in the aerial photograph wear school colors of their choice (i.e. – purple for Jasper, orange for South Pittsburg, or red for Whitwell), or any other bright colors that would clearly show up in an aerial photograph.
In addition to the aerial photograph, live music and entertainment is planned as well as events for kids, a cake walk, silent auction, food, and more, with proceeds to benefit Kennedy.
Parking is available at the Jasper ball fields, located adjacent to the fairgrounds, and handicap parking will be available at the fairgrounds. Signage is planned to help with the traffic situation.
Organizers hope that everyone that’s able to attend comes out tonight to show their support for this brave young girl.
