Sequoyah Nuclear Plant is located 18 miles north of Chattanooga. Construction began in 1969, and Unit 1 began full commercial operation in 1981. Unit 2 began operation the following year.
SODDY DAISY, Tenn. – The Tennessee Valley Authority is upgrading its emergency siren system at the Sequoyah Nuclear Plant in East Tennessee to extend its range.
TVA said contractors will begin work this week to replace 108 sirens and add four more in its nuclear plant emergency zone in Bradley and Hamilton counties.
Each siren will be tested after installation and people living within 10 miles of the plant can expect to hear multiple tests of 20 seconds or longer for six days a week over the next two months.
TVA has done similar siren work at Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant near Athens, Ala., and plans an upgrade at Watts Bar Nuclear Plant in Spring City.
TVA says it’s investing $7 million in the project.
