The incident happened after the Marion County Sheriff’s Office was called to a report of a trespasser asleep on the porch of a home on Lock N Dam road near Jasper.
Upon the deputy’s arrival, a warning shot was fired by the suspect.
In an interview with WRCB Channel 3 News (http://bit.ly/1814pcf), Dan Souther says he was spending his morning relaxing on the Tennessee River.
“[I was] Drinking a cup of coffee, when I got interrupted by my dog,” said Souther.
He says his dog was barking at an intruder.
“He was supposed to have been thrown out of a boat and was wet and cold and needed to go to the marina. I was assuming that his car was over there,” said Souther. “[I] took him down on the golf cart, was going to take him across to the marina in the boat to drop him off and that’s when things went bad,” said Souther.
Souther told the TV station that when they got to the dock he began to prepare the boat was soon in the water.
Souther said he was shoved in and disarmed, however was able to fire warning shots, to scare the suspect into dropping the weapon.
Police showed up at this point, and the suspect ran into the woods, with police not far behind.
“The person pointed the firearm at the officer and he used deadly force,” said Sheriff Ronnie Burnett.
Souther says he’s sorry the person was killed, however is thankful he and his wife are okay and will think twice before helping someone out.
The man who was killed has not been identified at this time.
No officers were hurt in the incident.
