WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service reminds taxpayers who converted amounts to a Roth IRA or designated Roth account in 2010 that in most cases they must report half of the resulting taxable income on their 2012 returns.

Normally, Roth conversions are taxable in the year the conversion occurs. For example, the taxable amount from a 2012 conversion must be included in full on a 2012 return. But under a special rule that applied only to 2010 conversions, taxpayers generally include half the taxable amount in their income for 2011 and half for 2012, unless they chose to include all of it in income on their 2010 return.

Roth conversions in 2010 from traditional IRAs are shown on 2012 Form 1040, Line 15b, or Form 1040A, Line 11b. Conversions from workplace retirement plans, including in-plan rollovers to designated Roth accounts, are reported on Form 1040, Line 16b, or Form 1040A, Line 12b.

Taxpayers who also received Roth distributions in either 2010 or 2011 may be able to report a smaller taxable amount for 2012. For details, see the discussion under 2012 Reporting of 2010 Roth Rollovers and Conversions on IRS.gov. In addition, worksheets and examples can be found inPublication 590 for Roth IRA conversions and Publication 575 for conversions to designated Roth accounts.

Taxpayers who made Roth conversions in 2012 or are planning to do so in 2013 or later years must file Form 8606 to report the conversion.

As in 2010 and 2011, income limits no longer apply to Roth IRA conversions.

JASPER, Tenn. — Carol Bailey, director of Coordinated School Health for Marion County Schools, would like to congratulate Whitwell Elementary, Whitwell High School, Jasper Middle, South Pittsburg Elementary and Monteagle schools for receiving mini grants from CSH. The Healthy Teams at each school were responsible for submitting applications based on the results of their school’s School Health Index Survey and the 8 components of Coordinated School Health. The 8 components of Coordinated School Health are:

*Healthy and Safe School Environment
*Comprehensive Health Education for grades K-12
*Physical Education and Activity
*Nutrition Services
*School Health Services
*School Counseling, Psychological and Social Services
*Student, Family and Community Involvement in Schools
*Health Promotion for School Staff

The teams chose one or more of the 8 modules that best addressed the needs of the students at their schools. Once the needs were assessed, the teams developed a School Health Improvement Action Plan. By taking steps to implement each action, the teams created a budget, decide on target dates to accomplish goals and assigned responsible people tasks for completing the Plan. The components chosen by the schools were School Counseling, Physical Education and Physical Activity, Staff Wellness and Student, Family and Community Involvement. Materials were provided to support the specific needs requested for each school.
Coordinated School Health is an effective system designed to connect health with academics. Students’ health and their capacity to learn are enhanced through the support of families, communities and schools who work together. Educators in Marion County know students must be healthy to be educated and must be educated to be healthy.

Congratulations to the schools for strengthening academics by improving student’s health!

Legendary comedian Bill Cosby will play the Tivoli Theatre Sunday, April 14 at 7 p.m. as part of his current national tour to promote his latest book, “I Didn’t Ask to Be Born, But I’m Glad I Was.”

Though to younger generations Cosby exists in cultural references to Jell-O Jigglers and Pudding Pops and unique sweaters of all colors and designs, he has played a vital role in easing racial barriers with humor and witty observations.

He was the first black actor to co-star on a television series “I Spy,” the NBC show about a tennis journeyman and his trainer who were actually spies for the Pentagon. From 1965 to 1968, Cosby played trainer Alexander Scott to Robert Culp’s professional athlete Kelly Robinson.

Cosby also beat out his co-star to win the Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series three years running.

The height of the beloved entertainer’s influence on modern television came with “The Cosby Show.” The sitcom, which ran from 1984 to 1992, was lauded as “an encouraging sign of maturity in matters of race” by Time magazine, and the Huxtables became an indelible part of popular culture.

Cosby, 75, has been a prolific artist throughout his five-decade career: He’s written 12 books, released 21 comedy albums and 15 music albums; created television shows such as “Little Bill” and “Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids”; and received 13 honorary degrees.

His newest book offers a collection of his laugh-out-loud and insightful thoughts on the human condition and the things that occupy his life now, including grandchildren and musings on game show contestants.

Tickets for the April performance go on sale Friday, Feb. 1 at 10 a.m. and will range from $48 to $65.50.

I have to admit…I’m finding myself obsessed with ABC’s new drama, “Nashville”. This is not my usual type of TV show by any means. I’m usually more into History Channel and A&E shows like American Pickers, Duck Dynasty, and Storage Wars…but I guess in the wake of Fox’s “House, M.D.” ending after eight seasons last year, and my growing lack of interest in CSI, NCSI, etc..etc.. of late, I needed something to fill the void.

The show is based on longtime country star Reyna James (actress Connie Francis of “Friday Night Lights” movie and TV fame) and her family and career. Reyna is facing a fork in the road with her career as well as the competition of new, up-and-coming stars, like Juliette Barnes (actress Hayden Panettiere). Reyna is very similar to your real-life Martina McBride or Faith Hill, the sweet and respected hit-maker ladies of country, whereas Barnes is more your “bad girl” pop-country style gal (think Miranda Lambert or Taylor Swift).

“Nashville” takes you on a journey in the life of these fictional country stars, their family and love lives, and the “insider drama” of the music industry in the world of country music in Nashville, Tenn.

The show has taken many twists and turns since it began last fall, but you’ve still got time to catch up with episodes on ABC’s OnDemand options on cable and on Hulu and other online sources. I HIGHLY recommend checking the show out, if you haven’t already.

If nothing else, the show features some new country music that’s actually performed by the actors — one of which is currently charting on the Billboard Country charts, “Telescope” by Hayden Panettiere.

Nashville airs locally on ABC affiliate News Channel 9 (WTVC – Chattanooga) on Wednesday nights at 9pm CST.

The refuge would cover approximately 25,000 acres in Franklin County near Estill Fork, Hurricane Creek and Larkin Fork.

Dwight Cooley, who manages refuges in Alabama, said the tract is 1 of the most important in the southeast.

Living within it are at least 15 federally endangered or threatened species and a number of species considered endangered or threatened in Tennessee. Much of the land is forested and provides habitat for migratory birds and other wildlife.

The agency hopes to have a draft plan for public review in April and have authorization for the refuge by fall.

Fish and Wildlife is taking comments on the proposal.

More information is available at fws.gov/southeast/paintrockriver.

The weekly television show aired on WTVC-TV (Channel 9) on Saturday nights and featured classic scary movies along with the crews’ own mixture of horror and comedy.

It’s been decades since the original show last aired, but some diehard fans are bringing it back with a new cast, including the leader in the effort, Jack Gray, who plays the new “Dr. Shock”.

Over the past two years the group has made a strong presence on the Internet, as well as social media sites such as Facebook and YouTube, and were even able to feature a new episode of Shock Theatre on TV recently.

In addition to their web presence and other ventures, the group has hosted several live events at South Pittsburg’s historic Princess Theater, including a screening of the 1935 classic “The Bride of Frankenstein” in September 2012.

The crew will be back at it again in 2013 with another horror cult classic, as Shock Theatre Presents “Plan 9 From Outer Space” – in COLOR at the Princess Theater on Saturday, January 19th.

IFRAME Embed for Youtube

You’ll have the chance to meet Dr. Shock, Nurse Goodbody, Dingbat and Dirge as they present this classic horror experience on the big screen at the theater, as well as enjoying prizes, a magic show and more as you experience a retro cinematic event in the historic Princess Theatre.

Between movies, attendees will be treated to “The Magic of Scott”, by Scott Fillers, as the veteran magician dazzles the audience with his illusions.

Doors will open at 6pm CST, shows start at 7pm and 9pm Central Standard Time.

The Princess Theater is located at 215 South Cedar Avenue in South Pittsburg.

Tickets are $10 Adults, Children 12 and under $5, and can be purchased in advance at the Dixie Freeze and City of South Pittsburg office. Tickets will also be available at the box office day of the show.

Lil Wayne now has 109 songs on that chart with the debut of Game’s song “Celebration,” where he is a guest alongside Chris Brown, Tyga and Wiz Khalifa. Of his 109 charted songs, only 42 are led by Lil Wayne; 67 are songs where he is the featured act.

Elvis Presley totaled 108 songs on the Hot 100 since it launched in 1958. Presley’s career kicked off before that and several of his songs – like “Heartbreak Hotel” – could not be included in his total number.

The “Glee” cast has the most Hot 100 entries with 204.

Chattanooga State Community College will hold its third annual Family Fish Fry July 21 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will take place outside of the Student Center in the heart of the main campus.

The event is free and open to the public. Free parking will also be available for those who attend.

Members of the Student Affairs team will be available to assist guests with completing the admissions process, applying for financial aid, academic assessment, advising, registering for fall classes, paying fees, or completing any other unfinished tasks.

Fall classes begin on Saturday, Aug. 25. Because of the hectic nature of the fall semester, completing all of the components of admission and registration in advance prepares new students for a successful start at Chattanooga State. The Family Fish Fry provides a relaxing and enjoyable environment for guests to complete the enrollment process, officials said.

Additional details about the Family Fish Fry in July are available by contacting Michelle Olson at 423-697-5740 ormichelle.olson@chattanoogastate.edu. For information about the Family Fish Fry in July or Chattanooga State’s enrollment process, go to the college’s website at www.chattanoogastate.edu.
The event will be a barbecue and beer-tasting event with a variety of beers provided by Carter Distributing.

Additionally, people who think they have the best-tasting barbecue in town are invited to bring their product to the zoo and let locals decide.

Attendees will be allowed to explore the zoo after-hours while enjoying the barbecue and beer.

Live music will be provided by the Mountain Cove Bluegrass Band.

All monies raised will go toward education and outreach programs.

“We are excited to offer a new, family-friendly event this summer at the zoo,” said Darde Long, executive director. “The South is known for having great barbecue, so we thought a Brew ‘N’ Q would let folks showcase their talents in a fun and unique setting, while enjoying some brews and listening to great live music.”

If you are interested in competing in the barbecue cook-off, please contact Marisa Ogles at 423-643-5710 no later than Thursday, July 19.

Tickets are $10 per person in advance and $20 at the door. Tickets for children 12 and under are $5 in advance and $10 at the door. Children 3 and under are admitted for free. Tickets are available online and at the Chattanooga Zoo.
