High School Football Preview for Friday, Sept. 23rd

High school football season in the Sequatchie Valley is going by pretty fast this year, but there’s still a lot of big games to play and several of those are in week 6 tonight in Tennessee!  Plus, it’s the FIRST Friday night of FALL! Here’s the preview of those games and others for our local teams for this week…

MARION COUNTY WARRIORS vs Boyd-Buchanan Buccaneers…

MARION-COUNTY-TNWhat is there to say about last week’s homecoming game against Brainerd other than…AMAZING! The Warriors shined in game play last week against the Panthers, lighting up the scoreboard so fast you had to do a double-take to make sure it was a football game and not a basketball game! The Warriors dominated the first half, with Brainerd only starting to answer the Warriors scores late in the game. The final score was 74-34 in an amazing victory for Marion County.

This week the Warriors host rival Boyd-Buchanan for a conference game at home in Bill Baxter Stadium. The Warriors are 5-1 on the season, the Bucs enter tonight’s contest undefeated with four games under their belt this season (their first game against Tennessee Christian Prep on 8/19 was a forfeit by Tennessee Christian, which is an automatic ‘win by forfeit’ for the Bucs)…and no doubt they’ll be up for the challenge from the Warriors tonight. Of the four games Boyd has played this season, they’ve won them all — but I wouldn’t say it was “big wins” like you think of with a team like Boyd-Buchanan, at least not on the scoreboard. There haven’t been any shut-out scores; however, lots of action with low scores and tight games. Needless to say the boys from Boyd-Buchanan play a tough game…and a close game…every year. Boyd beat King’s Academy back in week two 28-24, followed by a 34-14 win at Brainerd the following week ,and a 24-22 win at home over Tyner last week.

As you may have read a few weeks back, the MCHS football program was slapped again with another probation by the TSSAA for a recruiting violation. The TSSAA accepted the school’s self-imposed punishment, with Coach Joey Mathis serving a one week suspension last week, which included the game against Brainerd. This week sees the one week suspension of Assistant Coach, Tim Starkey, who will be sitting out of tonight’s game against the Bucs.

Tonight will be a good night for football in the Sequatchie Valley for sure, and you can expect one heck of a football game if you’re headed out tonight to Jasper! It might not be the rivalry of legends like the games with South Pittsburg, but it’s certainly one that’s big…and one that matters! Kickoff tonight is at 7:00pm CDT in Jasper and you can listen to Dave Daffron and the Marion County Broadcast Team’s play-by-play coverage LIVE on WTNW-AM 820 in Jasper and in its’ entirety on their online “Warriors Radio” LIVE stream — access this stream on our page here under the “Radio” tab above.

And a quick note for those planning to attend the game against Tyner at next week… It was announced last week that the time and venue for that game has been changed. Marion will now face Tyner at Finley Stadium in downtown Chattanooga on Thursday, September 29th. Kickoff is still set for 7pm CDT for this game.

This week will also be Public Safety and Military Appreciation Night at the stadium. Military, first responders, fire and police officers will be recognized before the game. Show your badge, ID, or Military ID to get in free! And the MCHS Quarterback Club has helped arrange for the game ball and flag to be delivered again from the air with the help of the folks at the Chattanooga Skydiving Company.

south-paris-tnComing off a BIG win last week to Copper Basin at home, the Pirates hit the road to Coalmont, TN to take on Grundy County tonight. Last week the Pirates walked away with a 55-6 win over the Copper Basin team. This came on the heels of back-to-back wins over Bledsoe and Marion, making the Pirates go 4-1 overall this season.

Grundy enters tonight’s coming off a 13-12 loss last week to Upperman. Grundy has traditionally been a very powerful defensive team, but this season hasn’t been so for the Yellowjackets. In week one they fell 35-12 to Whitwell followed by a 58-6 loss at the hands of Marion County in week two followed by their only win this season — 13-12 over Cannon County on September 2nd. The following week saw a 48-7 upset on the road for Grundy at Watertown High School.

Tonight’s game will be on the mountain in Coalmont. Kickoff is 7:00pm CDT, with the radio broadcast heard on WEPG-AM 910 and Charter channel 197 in South Pittsburg.

The Whitwell Tigers looked their best yet last week against Lookout Valley on the road in Tiftonia! And man, what a win for the Tigers! 58-14 was the final with Whitwell dominating the scoring for the entirety of the game — only allowing the Yellowjackets to get two TDs on the board before calling it a wrap.

Whitwell has a bye week this week, so there’s no game tonight for the Tigers.

Next week they’re back at home in Vernon Holtcamp Stadium to take on the Grace Baptist Academy Golden Eagles. Grace shut-out Concord Christian in week one action 65-0 in Knoxville, followed by a 42-20 loss to Exell-Harding, a 48-13 win over Lookout Valley, a 33-7 loss to Silverdale, and a 49-0 win over Sale Creek last week. Grace Baptist faces Copper Basin on the road tonight before coming to Whitwell next week.

NORTH JACKSON CHIEFS vs. Scottsboro Wildcats…

NJHSHelmetIf rivalry football is your thing, then tonight’s game in Stevenson is definitely another great rivalry to check out! The Chiefs enter tonight’s game after a 48-28 win on the road in Boaz last week over Sardis —  a game that was played on Thursday night. The Chiefs are 3-2 overall on the season after two losses to start the season against Alexandria and Cullman, followed by three back-to-back wins over Kate Duncan Smith DAR, Madison County, and then last week’s game against Sardis.

The Scottsboro Wildcats are undefeated so far this season, making them 4-0…after a big 35-3 win over Fort Payne in week one, a 63-21 win against Crossville, AL, 62-6 over Douglas, and 23-7 victory last week on the road against Guntersville.

Tonight will definitely be a good night for football in Alabama as these two teams meet to renew their annual rivalry. Kickoff is 7:00pm CDT at North Jackson High School. To wrap-up the month of September, the Chiefs travel to Huntsville to face Randolph Academy next Friday night.

North Sand MountainThe great season of football for the Bison continued last week with a 14-10 win over Sylvania at home. The North Sand Mountain Bison are now 4-1 overall on their season, with their only loss being against Dade Co., GA in week two. Tonight they hit the road to face the Ider Hornets who haven’t shared the same luck for winning this season.

The Hornets are 1-3 overall, 0-3 in their region, with their only win being way back in week one on the road in Valley Head where they crushed the Tigers 30-0.  That win was followed by a 27-6 loss the next week at Collinsville, a 27-0 blanking to Sand Rock on Sept. 9th, and a 53-0 shut-out on the road in Fyffe last week.

Kickoff for the North Sand Mountain Bison is set for 7:00pm CDT tonight in Ider, AL. The Bison travel to New Hope next week to close out the month.

1395235461_dade_county_wolverinesAfter a rocky start to the season with a 42-28 loss to the Gordon Lee Trojans of Chickamauga, the Wolverines stepped-up the pace for week two with a close 32-30 win over North Sand Mountain, but that game was followed by more losses for the Wolverines… 42-7 on the road against Trion on September 2nd, and a 35-13 loss after a week off on the road in Rome, GA to Model last Friday night.

The Wolverines are back at home in Trenton this week and face the Rockmart Yellowjackets. The ‘Jackets are 3-1 overall and 1-0 in their region. They enter tonight’s game after a 62-6 win over Armuchee, GA last Friday night for their homecoming game.
