The 2016 Tennessee Titans Mr. Football Awards banquet was held on Monday at Nissan Stadium — home of the Tennessee Titans — in Nashville.

The Marion County area was well represented in Division I Class 2A with two of the star lineman from Marion County High School in the running as finalists for the coveted Mr. Football Award.

Seniors Alex Kirkendoll (#17) and Hunter McClain (#40) both were nominated for the 2A Lineman division beating-out Donald Staats of Watertown High School and Slayton Wild of Forrest High School.

At the ceremony on Monday it was announced that the Mr. Football Lineman of the Year Award for that division would go Kirkendoll, a 6′-2″, 220lbs Senior for the Warriors. Kirkendoll was named as a semi-finalist in Class 2A last year (2015) and his nine tackles in the Warriors 40-35 loss to Trezevant in the 2A title game last year earned him the Defensive MVP of the Blue Cross Bowl.

McClain, the 5′-11″ 195 Senior receives the runner-up award for the Division 1 2A Lineman of the year.

Both Kirkendoll and McClain have worked hard while coming up in the Warriors football program since coming to the school as freshman. Both have seen several head coaching changes and been to the Blue Cross Bowl in Cookeville now twice — first against Peabody in 2014 and then against Trezevant last year…who the Warriors with the help of Kirkendoll and McClain will face once again this coming Saturday in Cookeville.

We at MarionCountyMessenger.com want to congratulate both Kirkendoll and McClain on their nomination and acknowledge the efforts both have put into their program making it a powerhouse in the Sequatchie Valley. And congratulations to Alex Kirkendoll for the Mr. Football Division I Class 2A Lineman of the Year honors from the awards.

Marion will face Trezevant on Saturday at 11:00am CST in Cookeville. Tickets are available now at Marion County High School’s front office during school hours this week. The price is $12 — cash only. Parking is separate — $10 cash on site (no pre-paid available). Gates in Cookeville will open at 10:00am CST with the game following. MCHS receives a larger percentage of money based on the number of tickets they pre-sale from the school and last year outsold every team taking part in the games in every classification. We highly encourage buying your tickets now from the school if you plan to attend the game.

If you’re unable to attend the game, the Dave Daffron and the Marion County Broadcast Team’s play-by-play coverage can be heard on the Warriors Radio online stream with MarionCountyMessenger.com in cooperation with WTNW-AM 820 and WEPG-AM 910; the flagship stations of the Marion County Warriors.

Again, congratulations to Kirkendoll and McClain…and best of luck to the Warriors on Saturday in Cookeville!
