UPDATE — 10/5/17 @ 8:01 AM:
Investigators with the South Pittsburg Police and Marion County Sheriff’s Department are still looking for more information in the case of a shooting that happened late Tuesday night in South Pittsburg.
19-year-old Zachary K. Cantrell of South Pittsburg was shot twice — once in the back and once in left hand — with a 9mm semi-automatic pistol after an apparent altercation at a residence in the 200 block of Birch Avenue. Cantrell was taken to Erlanger Medical Center for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries..
According to police reports from the time of the incident, the victim did not identify exactly who it was that shot him; however, it’s been reported that he later identified the shooter as 44-year-old Michael A. Godsby, also of South PIttsburg.
While there’s been no official word on what could’ve led to the dispute between the two, MarionCountyMessenger.com has learned that the victim is the boyfriend of Godsby’s daugther and the two have a young child together.
According to South PIttsburg Police Chief Ryan Meeks, no arrests have been made at this time and he says the investigation is ongoing as they continue to be on the lookout for Godsby, who’s a primary suspect in the case. Meeks says the weapon used in the incident has not been found, so Godsby could be armed.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) is also assisting South Pittsburg Police, but the state agency has not opened its own investigation, according to officials.
Godsby is described as a white man about 5 feet, 10 inches tall, weighing 178 pounds with green eyes and brown hair. Local authorities ask that if you have any information on Godsby’s whereabouts or any other information that could assist investigators with this case, to please call the South Pittsburg Police Department at 423-837-5003 or the Marion County Sheriff’s Department at 423-942-2525.
